Schrödinger's Doctor
The mysterious case of a doctorate that appears to exist and not exist at the same time.
In the previous dispatch I wrote about details and their outsized importance. Today we continue.
But first, a small reminder. You remember the cease and desist letter sent to one of the characters of this story on Henrik's behalf? I published it in earlier dispatches. Among its many remarkable demands, the recipient was forbidden to contact universities or to make enquiries. Hold on to that detail.
So. In studying this story I have relied, like any honest researcher, exclusively on open sources. And do you know what I discovered? Henrik is not simply a doctor. Henrik is a doctor always and everywhere. Source materialHenrik Christiansen · LinkedIn profile. Doctor right there in the LinkedIn address bar, so that even the browser is left in no doubt. Doctor in his company's press release. Doctor in the materials of his previous companies, going back to around 2019. Doctor on his websites. Doctor in his presentations. Less a man than a walking academic title. At least, that was the case until around February 2026. The profile has since changed, seriously so. See for yourself.
In short, having worked through what must be every link on the internet, I finally got round to the documents of Estithmar (part of the Power International Holding group, PIH for short).
The company is public, listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange, and all of its filings are, naturally, published. The particular beauty of stock exchange documents is that you cannot make things up in them. At all. False information in the filings of a listed company carries sanctions of a calibre that cures the urge to make things up very quickly. Up to and including delisting.
And this is where the magic starts. In the annual report, on the page where the CEO is introduced, there is no doctor. In the financial statements he signs, there is no doctor either. No footnote, no asterisk, no modest Dr. before the surname. Nothing. Yet in documents of the very same company, published on its very own website (press releases, news and so on), the doctor is there. On the name plates at press conferences, the doctor is there again.
In promotional materials, the doctor is everywhere. In the regulated filings, he is nowhere. Physicists call this a superposition. I call it Schrödinger’s Doctor.
Now, I always begin by believing the best in people. So I honestly allow that there may be some reason why a man with a doctorate would sometimes want to mention it and sometimes categorically not. Perhaps it is a special form of modesty, one that switches on strictly in documents carrying legal liability and switches off everywhere else. Such cases are unknown to science me, but there is a first time for everything.
Because, hand on heart, I have been studying human nature for quite a while, and here is one thing I know for certain: people are proud of their achievements. Diplomas, statuses, trophies, medals, the certificate for third place in a doughnut-eating championship. People hang these things in frames on their walls, write them into their biographies, add them to their email signatures. A diploma makes a person taller in their own eyes and in everyone else's; it adds social weight, salary, respect. I have never in my life met a person who hides a doctorate.
So, dear reader, let us try to find the answer in the most efficient way available. Taking this opportunity, from this platform, let us put to Henrik a question of public importance. Publicly, politely and with complete precision.
Henrik Halager Christiansen, do you hold a doctorate from the University of Liverpool?
If the answer is no, I will be sincerely grateful for the clarity and the truth. Honesty has a cleansing effect, and I will be the first to acknowledge it.
If the answer is yes, which I naturally hope for with all my heart, I will ask you to support that answer with a copy of the diploma confirming the award of the doctorate and the basis on which the title has been used publicly. And I will publish that information here, on this site, in full and in the most prominent place, with genuine pleasure. I promise.
As this dispatch goes live, I am sending Henrik an email with exactly the same question. It is not within my powers to set deadlines or terms, so I will simply say this: I am patient. Be patient too, my reader. I hope that an answer arrives within a reasonable time and that we receive the key to our Schrödinger mystery.
And yes, back to the detail from the beginning of this dispatch. Nobody is obliged to obey Henrik's prohibitions, and in any case he is not handing them out to me, but for the purity of the experiment I will play along and leave the universities in peace for now. Why bother universities when the primary source is available? This is one more mystery in my investigation, one of a great many, but unlike the others it can be verified astonishingly easily: with a single answer from the protagonist of this book himself.
P.S. All the sources behind this little paradox are collected in The Doctorate asset file. Do check them yourself. I would hate to deprive you of the experiment.
